The camping industry jumped in popularity as a safe way to travel and avoid crowds amid COVID-19 and business continues to boom as Americans remain wary of air travel yet eager for a change of scenery. In fact, “10.1 million households camped for the first-time in 2020, and more than 60% of these first-time campers plan to camp in the coming year.” 

Camping is the perfect socially distanced getaway that offers travelers a way to disconnect and experience the beauty of nature after a year of working from home, Zoom schooling, difficult news cycles, and more. One of the first steps to ensure a safe and comfortable stay is purchasing a tent. There have been 6.8 million searches for camping tents year-to-date, a 55.9% increase from the 4.3 million searches during the same period last year. With this increase in consumer searches, the camping tents topic jumped 97 spots year-over-year to the #372 topic in the U.S. Consumers generally keep their search for this topic broad, using keywords such as “camping tent”, “camping tents & shelters,” and “camping tents 4 people.”

To create the ultimate camping sleep set-up, there are several other related topics seeing a spike in consumer searches including: sleeping pads, sleeping bags, camping pillows, and camping blankets.

The Brands

Coleman is the leading brand for camping tents, with search volume up 15.5% to 19.2 million this year followed by brands GCI Outdoor, Core, and KingCamp.
